|Dr. Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah
By John Okafor C
To be first in anything takes unbridled enthusiasm, unstoppable determination, bulldog tenacity, enormous amount of hard work and a justifiable good luck. If you take all these characteristics, mix it with vivacious ideas, classic intelligence, reluctant patriotism and profound compassion for humanity, you will get an excellent depiction of Dr. Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah
To cut it short, Dr. Patrick IfeanyiUbah is a dynamic, passion-driven individual who personifies all that is good about volunteers who devote their lives to helping others. For someone who didn’t know, his face is one of the best known in the African philanthropy in general, Nigerian in particular and Anambra state to be precise.
I think there is one higher office than the president and I would call that The Patriot, so said Prof. Gary Hart, former US Senator and Diplomat.
However, there is much more to being a patriot and a champion than reciting the national pledge or raising a national flag, a patriot shows patriotism through their actions, by their choice. A famous American author Mark Twain also opined that Patriotism is supporting your country all the time.
Patriotism means to stand by the country; it does not mean to stand by the president or any other public official or party, save exactly to the degree in which he himself stands by the country. It is patriotic to support the president insofar as he efficiently serves the country.
Asked why he supported the ex-President, he said that Former President Goodluck Jonathan provided a free environment for business competition and he believes that freedom to compete and readiness to co-operate makes our system the most productive in Africa. He maintained that a President from the minority will surely send a strong signal that minority need no longer assume that this country won’t let them succeed. It won’t be the end of political inequality of course, but despite that possibility, the benefits outweigh the risks. At the very least, Jonathan candidacy emphasized the political importance of the minority, even though he lost.
That singular act of forming TAN was highly democratic and patriotic of a Nigerian who believed and stood by his President. He has indeed set the stamp for the future of the Nigerian democratic elections. Recall that before the advent of TAN, no group of people with a singular purpose, unflinching conviction, unwavering passion and an indomitable will, have ever come together to form a national alliance and drumbeat for either transformation or change. It would also be worthy to note here that the Change Ambassadors of Nigeria, CAN was also a model after TAN.
Nigeria is much more than a geographical fact; it is a political and moral fact. As a man of high morals, who believed that “all must be secured if any is to be preserved”, Dr. Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah distanced himself from the inglorious resolution of the Oil marketers and transporters to suspend distribution of petroleum products at the expense of the Nigerian people. He saw the suffering of the masses and the ordeals they pass through to get a litre of fuel. Many Nigerian institutions and corporations, Banks, communication companies, hospitals etc are shutting down because of fuel scarcity. Ifeanyi Ubah’s Capital Oil and Gas Ltd after a careful consideration of the Nigerian plight, have released over 400 trucks to inject about 70million litres of petroleum to Nigerian filling stations. This is indeed an uncommon act of patriotism and this singular act made him an extraordinary champion of the ordinary people.
In the words of Henry James, a famous American Writer, I think Patriotism is like charity…it begins at home. Dr. Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah back at his Anambra home state has established Ifeanyi Ubah Foundation, giving free education, community development like provision of Borehole waters, Electric transformers, road construction and repairs, free fuel and kerosene distribution to the masses. He built a 3000 seat-capacity catholic cathedral for his home diocese. Far from home, he has built and fully equipped with state-of-the-art tech, a 160 seat-capacity ICT Centre for the Nigerian Defense Academy, Kaduna. He distributed kerosene to all the Nigerian regions including the crisis areas in order to alleviate the plight of the poor masses. What a champion!
Dr. Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah is a believer in the Nigerian project. He believes that Nigeria is not a country lying in state and he believes in the capacity of the Nigerian youth never to allow Nigeria grow old in spirit which led him to engage in job creation and various youth development projects. His recent venture into the Nigerian sports sector and the creation of Ifeanyi Ubah Football Club has shown that he is really a Nigerian for the Nigerian youth.
Many Nigerian problems have all been talked about but not thought about in manner they serve. However, Dr. Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah, a political theoretician, and one of the few Nigerian intelligentsia has lead the way in thinking about most Nigeria’s problems. He has raised various national and regional questions. He has set forth objectives and has also enquired into the problems connected with these objectives. He has focused his attention on reforms, on social systems and on historical analysis of our present predicament as can be attested by his stand on Oil deregulation and Naira-Dollar Exchange rate maladies.
Dr Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah’s heart is beating green, white, green and that has turned him to a Nigerian for Nigerians. He has reached and changed the lives of the ordinary people through various platforms: Ifeanyi Ubah Foundation, Labour Party, Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria, TAN, PDP etc.
Recently the media is awash with the news of Dr. Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah joining the All Progressive Congress, APC and the news was greeted with various reservations and sentiments coming from different parties. The truth is that as a champion of the masses, Dr. Patrick Ifeanyi can reach the people from any platform he so desires. He has demonstrated that on various occasions. He has never really lived his life, but rather giving his life for the ordinary people. The ordinary people are his constituency.
Dr. Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah is a countrys-Keeper, a reliable democrat and reluctant patriot. The difference between him and most other stakeholders is that while he is proud of Nigeria for what he has done for Nigeria, most stakeholders are proud of Nigeria for what Nigeria has done for them or made them to be. What Nigeria and Nigerians need most now are patriots and champions who express their faith in Nigeria by working to improve on it. What Nigeria need now is more of Ifeanyi Ubahs.
Therefore, never again shall we employ the views and definitions of patriotism by Jesse Ventura, Mark Twain, and Gary Hart etc in the Nigerian context. Never again shall we teach our children the principles of true patriotism with the stories of our fore fathers. From this day forward, we shall tell them our own stories, we shall tell them of a living patriot, we shall tell them of a living champion, we shall tell them of a man whose heart beats green, white, and green, we shall tell them of an uncommon, reliable and reluctant patriot, we shall tell them of Dr. Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah
